MNA - Former Iran striker Khodadad Azizi is reminded of a goal that eliminated Terry Venables’ side from the France 1998 World Cup qualifiers.

Australia football team was held to a 2-2 draw against Iran on November 28, 1997, and failed to book a berth in the World Cup due to goal difference.

Khodadad Azizi scored Iran’s second goal at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of an astonished crowd gathered to celebrate their qualification for the World Cup.

“I always remember that goal. I am proud of scoring the vital goal which made Iranians so happy. Honestly, I have to say keeper Ahmad Reza Abedzadeh played the biggest role in that match. He disappointed the Australians so many times. Also, thank God for helping us take advantage of our rare chances,” said Azizi.

Australia missed out on away goals, not on goal difference. It was 3-3 on goals. Iran scored 2 away goals, Australia scored 1. No thank you for reminding me!
