ALAN GOW

The Scottish Sun - ALAN GOW has revealed he is ready to ignore government advice and kick-start his career in strife-torn Iran.

The Foreign Office has advised British citizens against "all but essential" travel to the country after the British Embassy in Tehran was attacked by radicals in November.

But former Falkirk and Rangers midfielder Gow insists he'll have no problem signing for Rah Ahan in the Pro League after two days visiting the Tehran-based club.

The 29-year-old, who quit Indian side East Bengal last month, said: "I have the offer of a deal there and I'm quite happy to take it.

"The club flew me over to Tehran for a few days to have a look around and I liked what I saw, although there may be a few problems when it comes to getting a visa to work there.

"When I made the original trip the British authorities advised me not to go, but I didn't see any bother. No one gave me any trouble.

"Rah Ahan are managed by Ali Daei, who's the most famous player in the country's history. He won 149 caps and played for Bayern Munich and he seems keen for me to sign.

"They're one of three major clubs in the city, so I'm just waiting to hear from them about when they want me to go over. I'm hoping for word from them in the next few days."

Gow left East Bengal due to injury, but revealed he would have stayed in India.

He added: "I had a heel problem which was bothering me. I also had a clause in my one-year contract which allowed me to leave for another country halfway through.

"Salgaocar, a club from Goa, wanted to sign me and I would have liked to join them.

"But East Bengal refused to let me go to one of their own rivals, so I came back.

"That was a shame because I loved the lifestyle out there.

"Unfortunately, the football side of things was a bit frustrating because the standard wasn't too great.

"Anyway, my heel injury has cleared up and I've been training with Airdrie and St Mirren just to keep fit. Saints spoke to me, but they don't have any money at the moment.

"Doncaster contacted me too, and asked if I'd go down there on trial, but they haven't got back to me yet.

"I'd rather stay at home, but the financial problems in the Scottish game are well known, so it looks as though I'll be heading abroad again."
