Javad Nekounam

GOAL - The Iranian star expressed his pride at being nominated for the prestigious award, adding on that it would be an honour to win it.

Iran and Esteghlal star player Javed Nekounam has expressed his pride of being nominated for the prestigious AFC Player of the Year award.

The experienced attacker has been putting in top performances for both club and country this year, and was visibly delighted at being touted as one of Asia's best.

"I would like to thank the organiser," he enthussed.

"I am very happy to be here and sit alongside the other two very deserved nominees.

"It was difficult to be here as i just finished an Iranian match.

"However, i rushed to ensure my attendance due to my respect to the event.

"I have a lot of sweet moments in my career; scoring a goal against Real Madrid, being in one of the top teams with Osasuna, being champions with Esteghal and it would be another honour if I win tomorrow."

Nekounam's inspirational role for club and country have led to comparisons between him and Iranian legend Ali Daei.

While he did  admit that the comparisons are flattering, Nekounam also went on to stress that he is fully focussing on his football for now.

He added: "It still too early to make any judgement.

"Anyhow i will be honoured if my name is alongside (Ali Daei) in the future.

"My philosophy is to get my job done as best as best possible.

"All i'm thinking now is to be the best for my club and country in the World Cup next year."

The AFC Award ceremony will be taking place in a grand ceremony at the Mandarin Oriental in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.
