Cristiano Ronaldo - Iran

Fcnaija - Iranian coach Carlos Queiroz has explained why Cristiano Ronaldo was not sent off during the 1-1 clash against Iran in the last Group B game of the World Cup on Monday evening.

The former Manchester United assistant coach worked with Ronaldo at the Old Trafford during his time with the English club.

The Portuguese tactician believed that Ronaldo should have been sent off for elbowing an Iran player.

Queiroz feels the only reason why Ronaldo remained on the pitch was as a result of his star status and the referee respected that a lot.

It is an elbow and if there is an elbow it is a red card.

The rules don’t say if it is [Lionel] Messi or Ronaldo it is only a little bit of an elbow. It is a red card. How can he give a yellow for an elbow? What is the difference in an elbow made by Ronaldo or someone else? The VAR washes his hands like [Pontius] Pilate.

Everyone agrees that VAR is not going well. The only countries that do not complain are Portugal and Spain. Queiroz said after the match.

Queiroz is expected to step down as the coach of Iran national team while Portugal will welcome Uruguay in the last 16.

The Round of 16 fixture will take place on Sunday, July 1.
