JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Defending
champion Iran trounced Kyrgyzstan, 10-2, on Monday, earning a place in the
semifinal round of the Asian Futsal Championship.
The victory strengthened Iran's bid to capture an unprecedented fourth
straight title in the tournament, which kicked off in Jakarta Oct. 22.
Futsal, or indoor soccer, is played by five players per side with two
20-minute periods.
On Tuesday, Iran will face South Korea, who defeated Kuwait 7-6 with a
golden goal in the last second of a five-minute overtime.
Playing in the other semifinal are Thailand and Japan. On Monday, Thailand
defeated Iraq 5-2 and Japan beat Uzbekistan 1-0.
Fourteen regional teams are participating in the nine-day championship.
