IRNA - German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt has signaled great interest in signing Mehdi Mahdavikia, whose contract with Hamburg runs out this summer, the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper reported Monday.

Hamburger SV officials have yet to offer a new deal to the 29-year-old Iranian defender, who has been sitting on the reserve bench for most part of this season.

A major sticking point in extending his contract with HSV will be Mahdavikia's current high salary, reportedly estimated to be around 2.5 million euros per year.

The Iranian international has repeatedly stated that he prefers to stay in the Bundesliga, should Hamburg decide not to extend his deal.

Mahdavikia joined Hamburg in 1999 from fellow Bundesliga rivals VfL Bochum.
