The clash had been due to take place on Tuesday but was postponed due to a severe sandstorm in Riyadh.
However, neither side was able to come out on top after play went ahead on Wednesday as Saba Battery opened the scoring after 14 minutes through Hamidreza Farzanh before Al Hilal leveled the scores in the 33rd minute through Osama Hawsawi.
The visitors created the first chance of the night after three minutes when Mohsen Yousefi’s shot from outside the area was pushed away by Al Hilal goalkeeper Mohammad Al Deayea for a corner.
Al Hilal offered their response two minutes later when Swedish midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson sent a cross from the right that was headed wide of the right upright by Majed Al Marshadi.
Saba Battery were unperturbed by that close shave and went on the attack and consequently took the lead in the 14th minute when Gholamreza Rezaei played a corner from the left that was headed home by Farzanh.
That goal sparked Al Hilal into life and they should have leveled the scores three minutes later when Libyan midfielder Tareq Al Taib sent a good cross into the box but Yasser Al Qahtani was unable to connect with the ball.
Al Qahtani went close again in the 22nd minute when he controlled a cross from Ahmed Al Fraidi on his chest before hitting an acrobatic shot that went wide before Abdulla Al Dossary’s effort was cleared by Saba Battery goalkeeper Almir Tolja for a corner.
But Al Hilal’s pressure eventually paid off in the 33rd minute when Wilhelmsson’s cross from the left was headed home by Hawsawi.
Al Hilal continued to pile on the pressure early in the second half and almost took the lead in the 52nd minute when Ahmed Al Fraidi curled an effort that looked to have beaten Tolja but the Bosnian goalkeeper superbly tipped the ball over the crossbar.
Saba Battery began to get themselves back into the game but still struggled to create any worthwhile chances while Al Hilal nearly scored a late winner in the third minute of stoppage time when Seol Ki-hyeon, who is on loan from English side Fulham, saw his shot saved by Tolja.
