AFC - Al Hilal coach Catalin Necula bemoaned his side’s lack of a killer touch as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Saba Battery in their AFC Champions League Group A clash at King Fahd Stadium on Wednesday.

Neither side were able to come out on top as Saba Battery opened the scoring after 14 minutes through Hamidreza Farzanh before Al Hilal levelled the scores in the 33rd minute through Osama Hawsawi.

“I’m not satisfied with the performance or the result because we had a lot of chances to score and get a win tonight,” said Necula.

“We created several scoring chances but we were not lucky to score.

“This is the second consecutive match that we have only got a draw after the last league match and things are not promising.”

“Some of the players were not at their best and some were unlucky like Yasser Al Qahtani, Christian Wilhelmsson and Ahmed Al Fraidi.”

The game had originally been due to take place on Tuesday but was postponed due to a severe sandstorm that had hit Riyadh.

But Necula refused to blame the postponement for the disappointing result.

“The postponement of the match didn’t affect the result today because our players are professionals,” he added.

“The players were ready to play the game whether it was yesterday or today.”

Saba Battery coach Firouz Karimi, meanwhile, believes both sides took a cautious approach to the game in order to avoid defeat but admitted he was pleased with the performance from his players.

“The game was very critical because it is the first match for both teams in the competition,” he said.

“Both teams were not very open because they didn’t want to make any mistakes.

“We came here to get the three points and we were close to doing that as we had some chances to get away with a win. However, we couldn’t score and we got a point from the match.”

Saba Battery will also tackle Al Ahli of the UAE and Pakhtakor from Uzbekistan in the group and Karimi believes his side are capable of progressing to the knock-out stage.

“This group is very hard but if things go well for us then we can qualify from the group,” he added.
