PFDC - KUWAIT CITY, Five days before the crucial World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arbia in Tehran, Iran defeated Kuwait 1-0 in a test match in Kuwait City.

The game was held as farewell match for veteran striker Jasim Al-Howaidi, who started and was subbed out early.

The lone goal of the day was scored by midfielder Maziar Zare from the penalty spot. The lively Mohammad-Reza Khalatbari, who had come close to breaking the deadlock twice before but had been denied by brilliant saves on both occassions, had, unnecessarily but clearly, been brought down inside the box after 83 minutes.

Ali Daei, who only didn't have the two Spanish based players available, used the game to test almost the complete squad, making no less than 11 substitutions after the break.

Iran overall were the stronger side, creating most of the scoring opportunities in the match.

Iran will now be hoping for a similar result against Saudi Arabia in Azadi Stadium on Saturday (19:00 local time, 14:30 GMT).
