So, you’re a big football fan. You cheer on your favorite sides and watch every match. Maybe you even have a jersey or two. Is it possible to get any more involved?
Yes! You should consider a fantasy football league. Fantasy football gives fans the chance to channel their inner manager, which may explain why millions of us are obsessed with assembling hypothetical teams and competing in online leagues against friends and people we’ve never met.
Don’t be discouraged if you're unfamiliar with how fantasy football works. You’ll be ready to dominate in your league with this handy premier.
Fantasy Basics
The fundamentals of fantasy football are quite simple. You select a team of players and each player on your team gains points based on their individual performances in real-life matches. The points accumulated by all players on your fantasy squad are added together to generate an overall score. The fantasy team in your league with the most overall points at the end of the season wins.
Since you can assemble your team from players on different sides, fantasy football puts a unique emphasis on individual players.
Pro football clubs may have many millions to spend on their personnel, but there are budget limits. This is also true in fantasy football. Fantasy players, or managers, begin the season with an assigned budget with which to purchase players. The total payroll of selected players must not exceed the budget limit. This prevents fantasy participants from grabbing an unrealistic line-up of huge stars on a single side.
Instead, managers are faced with the same dilemma as real club executives. You have to make decisions on the players you select based on the needs of your fantasy team and the budget on-hand. Sometimes these parameters mean you have to take a cheaper player when a standout is available.
Side Composition
You might find a variety of different squad sizes depending on the fantasy football games you play. Here we’ll examine the official Fantasy Premier League line-up, which has become a bit of a standard.
In a Fantasy Premier League, managers compose sides consisting of 15 players--2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders, and 3 strikers. No more than three players may be chosen from any one squad.
Once the sides in your fantasy league have been chosen, it’s time for the opening round of league fixtures. Managers must decide on the starting players and formation they want to play in the first match. Starters and formations may change throughout the season based on the opponent and available players.
Player Transfers
The rules in most fantasy leagues permit you to transfer players an unlimited amount of times before the beginning of the season. Fantasy Premier League gives you the option to transfer one player a week during the season.
A player’s transfer fee typically depends on his performance. Expect a valuable point-scorer to command a high transfer fee while a slumping player will go for less.
The Scoring System
It all comes down to points and how many your fantasy side can collect. Again, points are awarded to individual players and then amassed by the side. To introduce a little twist the action, points may also be deducted in some match scenarios.
Scoring systems vary from league to league, but here are general guidelines.
Points may be earned for:
• Goals
• Assists
• Clean sheets
• Goalkeeper saves
• Penalty saves
• Playing in a match
Points may be deduced for:
• Goals conceded
• Penalty misses
• Yellow and red cards
• Own goals
The manager selects a team captain before each match in Fantasy Premier League. Any points scored by the team captain count double.
