Nelo Vingada

PTV - Tehran's popular soccer team Persepolis has named Portugal's Nelo Vingada as the new head coach to steer the club for the rest of the season.

"Vingada will arrive in Tehran on Sunday to ink the formal contract and will start training sessions on Monday," said Persepolis chief executive Abbas Ansarifard on Friday.

"Afshin Peyrovani will be Vingada's assistant," he added.

According to Ansarifard, the Portuguese national will be able to also coach the team next season if club officials are satisfied with his performance.

Persepolis officials say a draft contract was signed when the chief of the club's board of directors, Hossein Hedayati, traveled to the United Arab Emirates.

The 55-year-old Eduardo Manuel Martinho Vingada terminated his contract with the Jordanian national team last week. He coached the squad 2007-2009.

Following consecutive defeats, the Reds have been facing problems in recent months and have shown poor performance this season.

Former Persepolis coach Afshin Qotbi resigned from his post and left the Iranian capital on November 18 after the club dismissed his Brazilian assistant Marco Antonio Alvarez and player Paulo Roberto do Carmo.

The Reds dismissed chief executive Dariush Mostafavi following the club's poor performance in Iran's Premier League (IPL) on January 5.

The defending champion currently sits in the third place in the IPL chart with 43 points, while their arch-rival, Esteqlal Tehran, tops the table on 52 points.
