Perugia remained unbeaten against Modena at the Renato Curi stadium with victory again on Sunday.

Before Sunday afternoon's game, the teams had met eight times - all of them coming in Serie B - with the home side winning five times and the other three ending in draws.

And Sunday's inaugural Serie A encounter again went the way of Perugia, thanks to goals from Ze Maria and Rahman Rezaei.

The opener came in the seventh minute when Ze Maria dished out the punishment from the penalty spot after Fabrizio Miccoli had been fouled.

The home side seemed to be playing as much more of a unit than Modena and their greater cohesion earned them a 2-0 lead within the opening half hour.

Although their second goal had a touch of luck about it, Brazilian Ze Maria was again involved in the thick of the action.

Ze Maria's corner landed at the feet of Mauro Milanese, who shaped up to shoot goalwards but instead mis-kicked straight to Rezai.

The defender though made no mistake with his effort and fired in from the centre of the penalty area.

Modena only had a couple of half chances in the first half and rarely troubled Sebastiano Rossi's goal.

That pattern continued after the break and Perugia striker Fabrizio Miccoli put a powerful drive narrowly wide of the target in the 51st minute.

Perugia continued to press forward, although they were finding a third goal hard to come by.

In the 64th minute, Zisis Vryzas failed to finish off a flowing move that had involved Fabio Grosso and Miccoli.

Miccoli however was looking the more likely beneficiary of goal number three.

Three minutes from time, he forced a fine double save from Marco Ballotta in the Modena goal.

Modena had equipped themselves well for Serie A following promotion, winning three of their first five games.

But they were swept aside by Perugia today, and could have suffered a severe hammering.

However, they did show fighting spirit in abundance and that should stand them in good stead should the going get tough as they seek to extend their stay in the top flight.
