MEF - Super sub Youssouf Hassan came after
the restart to net a double-delight after 71 and 75 minutes and steer Al-Sha'ab
to a hard-fought 3-2 home victory over Al-Nasr, as the winners moved to the
pole position of the table standings in the United Arab Emirates for the
first time this season.
Al-Nasr, coached by Frenchman Rene Exbrayat, edged their hosts 1-0 after 5
minutes, French striker Simba N'Diaye netting from the penalty spot after
flooring new Tunisian import Maher Al-Kenzari, before Jassem Al-Doukhi
levelled the scoreline for the hosts after 26 minutes, finding the back of
the net from a goalmouth melee.
Al-Kenzari, singed by the visitors 3 days earlier, regained the lead for Al-Nasr,
9 minutes from the break, courtesy of a well-laced free-kick, yet it was the
impressive double-delight by fresh sub Youssouf Hassan midway through the
second-half that secured all 3 points for new leaders Al-Sha'ab.
However, the most attractive league fixture featured league leaders Al-Wahda
against defending title champions Al-Ain against a 28,000 capacity crowd,
the entertaining game ending all-square 1-1.
Kandia Traore, recently transferred from Esperance Tunisia, netted his
second goal for the second match running in the 69th minute to salvage one
point for visitors Al-Ain, cancelling out a 38th-minute penalty effort by
Abdulrahim Juma'a for the hosts, as both sides saw Al-Sha'ab leapfrogging
over them to the pole position of the table standings.
Weah-less Al-Jazira saw their aspirations of mounting a serious challenge
for the coveted league title finally dashed, after being handed a 4-1
humiliating defeat by ever-improving Sharjah, for whom former international
marksman Saeed Al-Kas claimed a hat-trick after 24, 83 and 90 minutes, Al-Jazira
having to do without George Weah for one month following a recurring knee
injury to the giant Liberian striker.
Al-Ahly of Dubai moved to the 4th spot on the table standings after emerging
as the lone winners away from home in the 14th Week, a 2-0 victory over
unfashionable Al-Dhafra thanks to second-half goals from Ahmed Shah 52 and
Faysal Khalil 84 means the Reds are now trailing leaders Al-Sha'ab by just 3
points.
Al-Wasl of Dubai, one of the most successful sides in the 90s, maintaining
their winning spirits with a 3-0 home win over Dubai FC, Iranian
international forward Farhad Majidi notching 2 goals to take his tally to 9
goals in 14 matches, while Al-Shabab and Al-Ittihad fought out a 1-1 draw as
the first side are still struggling to regain their traditional form.
